NTWAB Members Smith, Nevills Named Sovereign Awards Finalists

The Jockey Club of Canada, located in Toronto, on March 7 announced the finalists for the 2016 Media Sovereign Award categories. Among the three media divisions, two NTWAB members were named in the Writing Category.


In alphabetical order, they are:


Joe Nevills, for writing "Giant Gizmo Rocketing up the Charts", published in Daily Racing Form. The story is about Giant Gizmo's ascension as a stallion and can be viewed here.


Beverley Smith, author of "Laurie Silvera’s Woodbine Paradise", published at woodbineentertainment.com. Smith's work is about 85-year-old trainer Laurie Silvera, a fixture at Woodbine for over 40 years, and can be seen here.


Judging for the 2016 Media Sovereign Award categories was performed by Professors of the Journalism Program at the School of Media Studies & Information Technology, Humber Institute of Technology & Advanced Learning, Toronto, Ontario, Canada.


The 42nd Annual Sovereign Awards will be held on Thursday, April 13, and the public is welcome with the purchase of a ticket. An Early Bird discount of $200 each and tables of 10 for $2000 is available now. Prices will go up on March 15 to $250 each, and tables of 10 are slightly discounted at $2400.

The National Turf Writers and Broadcasters with matching financial support from The Jockey Club, today announced a substantial expansion of its internship funding program for equine media outlets in 2026. Both organizations have authorized contributions of up to $12,000 each, co-funding potentially eight paid internships designed to bolster staffing in horse racing media and foster the next generation of equine journalists.

Bill Christine, a multiple award-winning sports and turf writer and former president of NTWAB, died at age 87.
