President's Message: Spring Meeting Coming Up

Hopefully, your spring is off to a great start. We’re rolling fast toward the Triple Crown and with it a few key reminders:

•  Please mark your calendar for Wednesday, May 3 for this year’s Derby Week meeting. We’ll finalize an agenda and meeting time as we get closer and will again offer a virtual option via ZOOM for members interested in participating without being in Louisville. That option has worked for the last several meetings.

•  Since it’s an odd year, we have three director terms slated to expire at the Derby meeting. The terms of Scott Hazelton, Marty McGee and Natalie Voss will expire. They are eligible to run for re-election, and all other members in good standing can also throw their hats in the ring. Candidates must be nominated at the meeting. If you are interested or know someone interested, feel free to reach out to me in the weeks ahead before the meeting.

The terms of the following current officers/directors will not expire until the 2024 Derby meeting – President (Tom Law), Vice President (Greg Hall), Treasurer (Dick Downey), Secretary (Jennifer Kelly), Director (Frank Angst), Director (Nicole Russo) and Director (JN Campbell).

•  The NTWAB is currently accepting new member applications to be considered by the board and membership during the Derby Week meeting. The board screens applicants before presentation to the membership and applicants are encouraged to submit materials by April 28.

The application process is spelled out in Article III of the NTWAB Bylaw, linked on the menu above. Please pay close attention to the rules, particularly if you are endorsing a candidate for membership. If you’re endorsing, remember that applicants should be actively and professionally engaged in the coverage of Thoroughbred racing. We receive support endorsement letters each year noting an applicant’s enthusiasm and passion for the sport. While we appreciate that, the main concern is their active and professional involvement in the coverage of racing. We are an organization of working writers and broadcasters.

•  Finally, attached you will find the spreadsheet detailing the first-place votes of NTWAB members in good standing for the 2022 Eclipse Awards. The officers and board of directors appreciate everyone that took the time to vote.

Have a great weekend,

Tom Law

NTWAB President
