NTWAB Member Byk Named Old Hilltop Award Winner

Writer and broadcaster Steve Byk, host of ‘At the Races with Steve Byk’ on SiriusXM, will receive the Old Hilltop Award on May 16 at the Alibi Breakfast at Pimlico Race Course.

The Old Hilltop Award is given annually to an individual who covers Thoroughbred racing with excellence and distinction. Previous Old Hilltop recipients include Red Smith, Joe Hirsch, Edwin Pope, Sam McCracken, Jim McKay, Dave Johnson, Scott Wykoff and Keith Mills.

‘At the Races with Steve Byk’ is Thoroughbred racing’s only national daily news and talk show. The show also streams live on stevebyk.com. Byk and trainers Chuck Simon and Gary Sciacca also created Dee Tee Stables in 2006, a racing club to bring fans into the game as owners at a minimal cost. Dee Tee has created more than 125 Thoroughbred owners.

“Receiving the Old Hilltop Award is a tremendous honor,” Byk said. “To join a roll call with legends of turf media like Jim McKay, Jack Whitaker, Joe Hirsch and Joe Kelly, as well as the many contemporaries I greatly appreciate and admire, is humbling. Pimlico and the Preakness hold a special place in the development of my love for the game as the first Triple Crown event I attended. The Alibi Breakfast is one of the game’s most vivid traditions, and inclusion in it means a great deal to me.”

The Alibi Breakfast, which began in the 1930s on the porch of the historic Pimlico Clubhouse, features a gathering of media, owners, trainers, jockeys, horsemen and fans to celebrate the Preakness and share interesting and humorous race predictions.
