NTWAB Member Smith Wins Media Sovereign Award

The Jockey Club of Canada announced at its annual awards dinner that NTWAB member Beverley Smith won the  2016 Media Sovereign Award. She was one of two NTWAB members nominated in the Writing Category.


Smith authored "Laurie Silvera’s Woodbine Paradise", published at woodbineentertainment.com. The work is about 85-year-old trainer Laurie Silvera, a fixture at Woodbine for over 40 years, and can be read here.


NTWAB member Joe Nevills was nominated in the Writing Category for "Giant Gizmo Rocketing up the Charts", published in Daily Racing Form. It can be viewed here.


The radio team of Horse Racing Radio Network, led on air by NTWAB members Mike Penna and Jude Feld, was named a Sovereign Award finalist in the Digital Audio/Visual and Broadcast Category. The award went to Woodbine Entertainment Group for its coverage of the Ricoh Woodbine Mile.


Judging for the 2016 Media Sovereign Award categories was performed by Professors of the Journalism Program at the School of Media Studies & Information Technology, Humber Institute of Technology & Advanced Learning, Toronto, Ontario, Canada.


The 42nd Annual Sovereign Awards were held the evening of Thursday, April 13.

The National Turf Writers and Broadcasters with matching financial support from The Jockey Club, today announced a substantial expansion of its internship funding program for equine media outlets in 2026. Both organizations have authorized contributions of up to $12,000 each, co-funding potentially eight paid internships designed to bolster staffing in horse racing media and foster the next generation of equine journalists.

The media awards are presented by the NTRA, Daily Racing Form, and the NTWAB in recognition of outstanding achievement in media coverage of Thoroughbred racing.
