DRF Writers Named in Sovereign Award Finals
Posted March 28, 2016
Daily Racing Form's Joe Nevills and Nicole Russo are nominated to the Sovereign Awards for writing. Both are NTWAB members.
The 41st annual Sovereign Awards ceremony, featuring the top horse racing luminaries in Canada, will be held on on April 8 at Woodbine Racetrack the evening before Woodbine’s opening day card.
Nevills and Russo are nominated for their story “Smart Strike Remembered.” The Canadian-bred sire was euthanized March 25, 2015 at Lane's End Farm, where he stood, after being stricken with laminitis. Smart Strike lived to be 23 and sired 113 stakes winners, 12 of them champions, and including four Breeders' Cup and two classic winners.
The story by Nevills and Russo may be read here.
The other finalists in the writing category are Curtis Stock for “A Love of Horses,” published in the Edmonton Journal, and Paul Wiecek for “Turbulence at the Track,” published in the Winnipeg Free Press.
Two other media awards will be presented.
Finalists in the digital audio/visual and broadcast category are Horse Racing Alberta’s Canadian Derby show; Darryl Kaplan and Britney Mayotte for “So God Made a Racehorse,” broadcast on Standardbred Canada and the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame; and Talkin’ Horses on CTV2.
Photography finalists are Michael Burns Jr., Hayley Morrison, and Chris Young.
